Delhi is been seen undergoing worst pollution effects these days.

Delhi pollution: Smog cover dissipates, PM levels slightly dip… The thick smog cover over Delhi seems to have temporarily dissipated but there has been no change in the air pollution levels in the national capital. According to data provided by System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), the particulate matter has slightly worsened in comparison with yesterday. Tuesday’s figures were pegged at PM2.5 622 µgm-3, an increase of 34 µgm-3 from Monday, and PM10 808 µgm-3, down from 844 µgm-3.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Monday issued the public warning to residents in Delhi to stay indoors due to the ‘severe’ condition of the atmosphere in Delhi. The President of IMA, KK Aggarwal, said, “We are now calling this as a pollution epidemic. Our advisory to people is to stay at home, if possible work from home and avoid stepping outside the house.”

As expected, the levels of air pollution remained “severe”, the highest warning as per the National Air Quality Index, throughout the night. Lack of wind led to little to no dispersal of firecracker emission, as was forecast.

At Anand Vihar, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee’s data showed that the concentration of PM2.5 (particles less than or 2.5 micrometers in diameter) peaked at a whopping 883 micrograms per cubic meter. That is more than 14 times the standard of 60 micrograms per cubic meter. Anand Vihar was also the most polluted when it came to PM10 (particles with the diameter of 10 micrometers or less), with 1,680 micrograms per cubic meter being recorded as the peak at 3.30 a.m. on Monday. That is more than 16 times the safe limit of 100 micrograms per cubic meter!

Here are some things you can do to stay safe in the smog and minimize your exposure when air pollution levels are high:

Keep children indoors:

Children face much higher health risks from air pollution than adults. Children breathe twice as quickly, taking in more air in relation to their body weight, while their brains and immune systems are still developing and vulnerable….

Take special care if you have asthma:

While it’s a good idea for everyone to avoid air pollution, the worst immediate effects are on people with pre-existing conditions. Pollution can trigger asthma attacks, even if it hasn’t done so before for you. Make sure you have your inhaler with you if you use one….

Avoid going outside at rush hour:

A large part of the pollution problem in Delhi has been caused due to the excessive number of vehicles on the streets, and the levels, obviously, are the highest at rush hours. If you can travel from work or home at a different time, do it.

Stay informed about air pollution levels

Get a feel for where and when pollution levels are high by using live pollution maps. Plan your day and journey accordingly.

Skip the run today:

You’ll massively increase your exposure if you do strenuous physical exercise outside. It might be a good idea to skip your run today, especially if you have asthma. Indoor exercise like going to the gym or swimming at an indoor pool might make a nice change….

Stay away from main roads:

Despite highly publicized factors like Diwali firecrackers and industrial effluents exacerbating the problem, the biggest unsafe concentrations of air pollution are always near main roads where motor traffic dominates. If you can help it, stick to the back streets.

Schools Are been Closed up: Gurgaon, Noida schools closed down owing to the pollution- Gurgaon District Magistrate, TL Satyaprakash issued an order on Sunday mandating various “precautionary measures” to “address the issue of air pollution”. The order prohibits “open burning of garbage/ waste/ leaves/ plastic material or any such material which causes or is likely to aggravate formation of smog”.
Schools in Gurgaon have also taken measures to protect students against the concerning pollution levels. While some schools have chosen to remain closed on Monday, others have been making use of air purifiers and encouraging students to wear masks to school.
Several offices, meanwhile, have noted a rise in the number of employees opting to work from home. “We have always offered work from home. But we have noticed a surge in the number of people availing of these options in the last few days because employees are also worried about stepping out in this kind of a situation,” said Manas Fuloria, CEO of Nagarro
